I Try DIY | Guest Post: Paper and Twigs Butterfly Wreath

First off, I want to greet my craft mentor on this special day.

I Try DIY | Guest Post: Paper and Twigs Butterfly Wreath

Since today is Mother’s Day, and I think it was only apt that I let my mom post one of her tutorials here on the site.

Collect twigs long enough to make a six inch full circle with some more that sprays to the side. Willow (aka Weeping willow) works well because they are pliable. For tougher twigs, soak in water for about 30 minutes or until it becomes manageable.

Use brown or black small plastic ties to keep the shape of the circle. I use 2 on what I refer to as to top of the wreath. Trim off excess plastic.

Using a butterfly punch, cut out 3 of each color of cardstock (plain or printed). Cut a minimum of 36 – enough for 12 butterflies.

I Try DIY | Guest Post: Paper and Twigs Butterfly Wreath

Using 3 cut-outs of the same color at a time, glue the body (center) of the butterflies. This give them the 3-D effect.

I Try DIY | Guest Post: Paper and Twigs Butterfly Wreath

When glue is dry, separate/open the left and right wings. You can mix colors, too!

I Try DIY | Guest Post: Paper and Twigs Butterfly Wreath

Using a stronger grade of glue, strategically glue each butterfly to the wreath in various positions. Let glue dry.

Display by a window using a suction cup hook.

I Try DIY | Guest Post: Paper and Twigs Butterfly Wreath

You can also hang by the side of a mirror or frame.

I Try DIY | Guest Post: Paper and Twigs Butterfly Wreath

You can also try making straight twig arrangements instead of wreaths!

The Candy DIY Book

Another birthday, another book!

It feels like only yesterday when The Friendship Bracelet Book came out. Two years later, here I am grateful for another crafts book I was lucky enough to work on. I was a squealing mess when I finally got my own copy of the book.

Family Field Trip on Rizal Day

  • Travels
  • Jan 20, 2014

On December 30th, a few of my relatives and I decided to go on a field trip. We decided to head on over to Intramuros (visiting San Agustin Church), Rizal Park in Luneta and Fort Santiago. I’m not sure if it was pure coincidence or if my relatives planned it, but we head on over to these historical sites on Rizal Day itself.

I Try DIY | Family Field Trip on Rizal Day

We walked around the San Agustin museum in the morning. Cathedrals and churches, especially those that are centuries old, are absolutely breathtaking.

Apparently, Juan Luna was buried there. I tried to look for him, but couldn’t find his remains in the crypt.

The exterior and landscaping around the church was as beautiful as the interior.

And as I always do in old buildings, I make sure to look up. The ceilings felt so massive, and reminded me of Grand Central Station and the Public Library in New York.

Everything was photogenic.

We then headed over to Luneta. We caught some Rizaleños celebrating by his statue.

Then, to Fort Santiago.

So much history. So many stories untold.

We walked Jose Rizal’s steps in reverse, back to where he was held.

Later that afternoon, the Rizaleños from Luneta were in Fort Santiago as well.

We roamed around the Fort, and took lots of photos.

It was nice to be in a real fort, and not “The Fort” that I live in.

I Try DIY | Family Field Trip on Rizal Day

I should remind myself to visit more of these places.

There’s still a lot of places to be seen!

A Newfound Love for Flowers

  • Workshops
  • Jan 17, 2014

I think I was in highschool when my Mom started making pieces with Pressed Flowers. Her pieces were hung in every house we ever lived in. It was one of those special things she gifted at weddings and birthdays. I was never the flower loving type of girl, and yet I’d always marvel at Mom’s work.

This piece right here is one of my favorites. It has an assortment of flowers native to Alaska–picked and pressed at different seasons. It’s hung somewhere in our home in Anchorage.

Tayo Na Sa Antipolo for Sumulong Day

  • Travels
  • Jan 14, 2014

Most of my childhood was spent in Antipolo. I grew up in the boondocks in a compound situated at the end of a highway named after my great-grandfather. Every year on December 27th, we’d gather at Sumulong Park for Sumulong Day. I’m so glad I was able to join in on the fun again this year.

The trek up Sumulong Highway was nostalgic. There was a mix of the new and the familiar. Roads were wider, and landmark corner stores were gone. A new still-empty market stood where the compound once was. Why haven’t I gone back to Antipolo sooner?

We first headed over the the Cathedral. It looked the same, but felt a little smaller than it used to be. Places tend to be massive in my memories.

Who is Lola Basyang?

  • Random
  • Nov 2, 2013

When the book The Five People You Meet In Heaven came out, I decided to list five people I thought I’d be meeting in heaven when my time came. One of the people I listed was Severino Reyes–the person behind the Lola Basyang stories. When I found out that I was actually related to the Ama ng Sarswela, I was beyond myself. I’ve since attributed my love (and whatever talent I had) for the written word to him.

I remember Lola Aging would tell me all about him. I also remember watching Walang Sugat on stage with most of my extended family. Boy, was I proud!

The last few months, our family has been planning a grand reunion. So grand, that I’m technically the 6th generation of the clan. One of my distant relatives brought this well-kept vintage collection to a meeting.

I Try DIY | Who is Lola Basyang?

The original book was split into three and had to be rebound to keep it in good condition.

I Try DIY | Who is Lola Basyang?

I flipped through the pages and was so tempted to bag one of the three volumes.

I Try DIY | Who is Lola Basyang?

Oh, what I would do to have this in my book collection!

I Try DIY | Who is Lola Basyang?

Timely as it is, today is my Lola Aging’s 92nd birthday. Happy Birthday, Lola!

Painting with Tita Mikko

  • Tutorials
  • Oct 30, 2013

When this little one asked if she could come over to my condo, I couldn’t say no. She’s quite the crafty one, so I knew we were in for an afternoon of activities. So after an hour of Dance Central, I thought it would be best to attack some paint.

I Try DIY | Painting with Tita Mikko

I wanted to teach her something new, so I was hoping to try out some blow painting. Instead of bringing out just the brushes, I took out some paper straws, too.

I Try DIY | Painting with Tita Mikko

I started dipping the straws in various colors.

I Try DIY | Painting with Tita Mikko

Then blew some streaks in whichever direction.

I Try DIY | Painting with Tita Mikko

I made a few sheets using different methods I had accidentally discovered: dripping, bubble bursting, splattering and streaking.

I Try DIY | Painting with Tita Mikko

So quick. So fun. So easy!

I Try DIY | Painting with Tita Mikko

Realizing that maybe abstract art wasn’t her thing, this is what she ended up making!

I Try DIY | Painting with Tita Mikko

Hey, Tita Mikko isn’t complaining!
