One of my resolutions for the year was to learn new creative things. Fear not failure, and just create.
With Halloween creeping up, here’s a creative way of packing up some candy for your trick-or-treaters!
Last Saturday, I headed over to Pipino Vegetarian for Alessa‘s Watercolor Crafternoon. Take away the fact that it took me nearly two hours to get there, the afternoon was a blast! I’ve always wanted to learn how to paint–even if it meant playing with watercolor like a toddler.
I arrived around 45 minutes later, but managed to catch up. Alessa had us dive in, playing with the amount of water used, trying out different ways to handle our brushes, and testing out different techniques.
Later on, she had us work on three projects. One of which was a watercolor version of “What’s in your bag?” Needless to say, it was a catastrophe! I’ve never been able to draw. Patterns on the other hand, well, I could handle.
The second project was to draw what we had for breakfast. For that day, all I had for breakfast was coffee, so I moved onto the last project. Write the alphabet.
Because I’ve grown so accustomed to writing my name M-I-K-K-O, I guess my hand found it all but natural to follow the Letter K with an O. So there, my alphabet is all messed up. ABCDEFGHIJK…O?
I’m looking forward to more crafternoons. I already promised Alessa I’d teach a Paper Folding crafternoon if anyone would be interested. Would you?

Apparently, while my mom was pregnant with me, she took a part-time job at Nordstrom (or was it JC Penney?) wrapping gifts for the holiday season. I don’t know if this story is true, or if I pieced together stories to make it to be true. Either way, it’s a great story to tell. Ang Alamat kung bakit mahilig akong mag-wrap ng regalo.
My mom loves to wrap gifts. I remember how our house in Antipolo used to have this pantry that housed all her supplies. We’d have wrapping paper for all occasions. Her stash of ribbons could rival that of Morning Glory’s (in Divisoria). The use of a gift bag was almost considered a sin. Every Christmas, I was always so excited to see what theme she’d come up with. One year, it was a shirt and tie gift bag. Another year, each gift was unique in its Japanese-inspired origami-like wrapping. Soon enough, I’d taken on the challenge myself. Why buy a gift bag when you can DIY?
I had a lunch meeting of sorts with my cousin yesterday at Galleria. I hadn’t been there in a couple months, so I decided to swing by Saizen to see what organization and crafts goodies I could score. Not finding anything quite to my liking, I walked away defeated. That was until I saw these jars as I walked by Japan Home.
Yesterday evening, I suddenly had flashbacks of crochet earrings. I used to make them when I was still living in NYC. I guess this crafts streak isn’t so recent after all!
